in the beginning…

My story started in January 2023 when I was retrenched by my employer. That triggered a host of inner-emotions and trauma I never knew existed. The subsequent months were empty and purposeless. I started dipping into my almost non-existent inner strength to restart life. The ideas I had of work, culture, colleagues, organisations as I knew it before was totally shifted and I started peeling out layers of what each of it meant to me. This was me – with 18 years of working experience, redefining the meaning of work for myself again.

I don’t think there is one blanket definition of work and its meaning, it differs for each of us. But how often do we stop to think of what work means to us or do we just continue on:- finish studies, attend interviews, accept a job offer & start working from Monday to Friday & repeat for the rest of our lives? Some trigger questions:

  • Are you in your current job because it pays the bills but you don’t quite enjoy it
  • Are you in your role for so long that you forgot what you were passionate about it in the first place
  • Do you know your reasons why you do what you do daily (Simon Sinek helps with this in his book called WHY)
  • How often do you get into the “flow” of work and lose track of time?

The questions resulted in me crafting my own ideal work – something meaningful to me and adds value to others. I started working with a few experienced freelancers who were in the game way ahead of me to understand the dynamics of the freelance and start up environment. Suffice to summarise it as it’s not a walk in the park.

  • Freelancers are hustlers.
  • There’s no base line salary to start with
  • No fixed hours
  • No existing clients.
  • If you are a mom with no family support
    • House-hold management
    • Kids
    • Work clients

My WHY:

  • Flexibility of time – for my own physical & mental health
  • Be present during the growing years of my young toddlers
  • Opportunity to push my own limits
  • Get creative with the solutions I can create
  • & eventually create income opportunities for fellow HR Professionals who are no longer employed

& the journey continues!
